This is *not* a tutorial, I don't really like the idea of tutorials as I think everyone should explore their own styles and whatnot. But anyway... I decided to post this to show how I work. (Which is so random I'm sure no one would want to do this anyway lol) I don't always work this way, sometimes I have a very detailed sketch underneath, but this is usually how I paint. (You can see more detailed sketches and the paintings that come from them on my sketch blog here: [link] )

1. Really vague pen sketch I did while playing with a friend. 99% of my art is based on myself playing the male characters with a friend, so in a way, my art is auto biographical, ;)

2. I scanned the sketch in and went over it in Painter. I work with Fractal Design Painter 6 and have for 10 years. In the beginning I used a trac ball and barely knew how to turn on a computer, so yes, this took me many years to even have a clue what I was doing with a tablet. I now work on a wacom Cintiq tablet <3

So here I'm actually doing a sketch on the tablet. Something I don't do much, it's easier for me to get details on paper, but for this I needed to.

3. Starting to lay colors down. I use a lot of airbrush and oil pastel for this, for shading generally a lot of watercolor.

4. More defining, highlighting, shading and whatnot.

5. Adding more of a dramatic light source with oil pastel. I just like the "feel" of oil pastel and watercolor. Not sure why, just my favorite thing lately. Watercolor is nice for shading as it lays a transparent wash over things, more natural looking, especially in hair, face shadows and etc.

6. Here I am mostly just blending. I use the just add water brush, which I've gotten pretty good at using to blend. I hear the new Painter has a blending tool, but as I still don't fully gather the concept of layers I have been avoiding, lol. Too bad for me, eh?

Finish: I forgot to take one adding the sort of archway. This is why I'd like to learn something to get vectors, so I had to do this just freehand (zoom in and you'll see it's wobbly and uneven, poor me. ^.^; Though I did have a brilliant idea. I took the left side and copied it, pasted it and flipped it around to make the right side of the arch. That's also why that side is a bit off. Painter is a but funky with things sometimes, but I'm used to it, sooo, hehe.

So that's how I work, generally. ^^ The Vampire noms you and thanks you for reading!

Eh, you should try to loosen your colouring style a little.

The pen sketch is quite nice, perhaps next time you could try a softer, lighter way of shading.
Try Opacity shading, I know it's more of a Photoshop thing but give it a go :D

Also, try to cut down the amount of black you're using. If you saw this scene in real life, the shades wouldn't look like this at all.

If I read correctly you don't understand layers? Well here's a little tip for you.
You need to start understanding them. They're really not that difficult :D

There're tons of tutorials on deviantART check 'em out!

You make it look so easy... but that tends to be a lie... paint digitally or traditionally is never easy.

Impressive insight. Thank you for showing this. It is lovely to see all the stages, it makes the details more vivid in the final piece. Stunning effort as always
